Semana Santa ( the holy week ) that vies only with the annual summer fairs for the position of the most important event on the Andalusian calendar. The streets in cities, towns and villages will be filled this Sunday with the sound of marching bands, the smell of incense and the sight of penitents in their famous pointed hoods escorting their images of Christ and the Virgin Mary.

The first festival of the year on the 6th of January is the Día de los Reyes Magos (Three Kings Day)
Día de los Reyes is a public holiday in Spain. Traditionally, Spanish children’s Christmas gifts are brought by the Kings on the night of the 5th and, beforehand, amid much excitement, their Majesties take part in processions in almost every city, town and village in the country.

FIESTAS DEL CARMEN ,on the July 16th is the day of the Virgen del Carmen, patron saint of fishermen, and this festival is particularly lovely. It is celebrated in many coastal towns. The statue of the Virgin is taken in procession to the beach, where gaily decorated boats await her arrival accompanied by a flotilla of "jábegas" (fishing boats).
Brass bands play, crowds cheer, rockets shoot off and fireworks fill the late dusk sky.
In Málaga, for example, the procession takes place not only on July 16, but on the following Sunday.
